The first adhesive postage stamps were issued in the US in 1847. At the time, significant amounts of domestic mail was carried by steamboats on inland and coastal waterways, all of which were considered by the Post Office Department as postal routes. However, most mail carried by steamboat was transported in locked bags under contract, and it is only the “loose letters” carried outside contract mail bags that are identifiable as having traveled by steamboat. Covers bearing steamboat markings and the 1847 stamps are scarce, and this presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of these historically important artifacts.
