I am a longtime collector having been introduced to the hobby by my father at an early age. I remember being given my first 1841 1d red and being captivated by its history. I originally built up a GB collection before becoming increasingly specialised in my approach. I first concentrated on the early issues before becoming more interested in the postmarks.

This led to decades concentrating on the postal history associated with the Maltese Cross obliterator and slowly building up the exhibit which won the Sliver Mailcoach trophy at Stampex in 2015 and the Grand Prix National at London 2022.

It is well known that the 1879 and 1880 competitive tenders resulted in Perkins, Bacon losing the contracts to print the penny red, halfpenny, three halfpenny, and twopence GB stamps.

This program will explain the story of those tenders, explain their requirements, and illustrate how each bidder complied, including submissions of designs, printing, inks, and gum, as well as related material later used for other purposes.

It also identifies plate proofs that have been incorrectly associated with the tenders and brings together an exceptional selection of rare and attractive line-engraved and surface-printed material.

This meeting will be hybrid with the speaker in the clubhouse and others on Zoom.
