This story is presented from a U.S. point of view. It covers major postal history events of the period with a particular focus on those leading up to the first U.S./GB postal treaty. Why is this called a treaty while other postal accords are called agreements or conventions? How much mail was traveling transatlantic at that time, how and why? These questions will be reviewed.

Included in the presentation are first issues of the U.S. and other countries on cover going transatlantic, pre-treaty and early post-treaty mail such as first sailings. Also, rates throughout the period, starting with pre-treaty, through the Crimean war and the United States Civil War will be shown with unique and unusual examples.
