From the “double franking” of letters by China and Germany, through the military post offices of the Boxer Uprising, to the “smuggled mail” of World War I, the postal history of the Shantung Railway reflected the political history of German-Chinese relations.
In this talk and my exhibit, I expand my one-frame exhibit on the postal history of the railroad during the construction period. I will examine the interplay of political and postal history reflected in the philately throughout the period from the lease of Kiautschou through the start of the Word War.
