This presentation will cover the history of city letter carrier services from 1753 to 1863. It will include a discussion of the Franklin and Eagle Carrier stamps and the carrier stamps and special markings of carrier departments in major U. S. cities.
Cliff Alexander is a Washington DC partner in the Asset Management and Investment Fund Practice Group of K&L Gates, a large international law firm. After receiving his law degree from Georgetown, he worked for the Securities and Exchange Commission and for the Securities Subcommittee of the Senate Banking Committee.
Cliff began collecting stamps at the age of 12 when his parents gave him a Minkus “New World Wide Postage Stamp Album.” His primary collecting interest today is postal history during the 18th and 19th Century of private companies, including local posts and independent mail companies. He also collects the postal history of city carriers, and of Washington, Georgetown and Alexandria.
Cliff is the chairman and a director of the Carriers and Locals Society. He served on the board of directors of the US Philatelic Classic Society and currently is a member of the Classic Society Finance Committee.
In 2023, Cliff received the Classic Society’s “Distinguished Philatelist Award.” He has written over 75 articles for the Chronicle, Penny Post, American Philatelist and Postal History Journal. He has given over 35 postal history presentations at meetings of the Classic Society and other philatelic organizations.
