British Postal Mechanisation: From TRANSORMA to the Modern Era, is the story of how the British automated the letter facing, destination sorting, delivery class and cancellation of stamps. This combination of postal, stamp and production history plus photos from the British Postal Museum and Dutch video from the Beeld En Geluid museum recounts the progress Royal Mail has achieved from the 1930s to modern-day processes.

Steve McGill’s collecting interests have been focused on the stamps of the U.K. for the past decade with special interest in exhibiting the Machin series from its forerunners to the latest Non-Value-Indicated printings. These interests have also led to an exhibit focused on the history of automated mail processing in the U,K. to explain the complex structure of modern British stamps.

During this time he has researched the full range of factors that make the Machin series rich in varieties. These factors include the artwork, paper-gum, phosphor-fluor, perforation and printing processes. This study has helped produce three Machin related exhibits that have been shown and vetted in the U.S. and International stamp shows. His research has included an IAP grant to study stamp phosphorescence at the Smithsonian Philatelic Museum. He is currently participating in a study of British modern counterfeiting with the Royal Philatelic Society, London.

The Machin exhibits have won large-gold national and international awards, most recently at London 2022; the first Brett Cup award in 2017 and a number of APS research medals. The Denominated Machin exhibit content has been published by the Forschungsgemeinschaft Grosbritannien e.V in Germany in 2019 as the Conserved Heritage Volume VIII. He has also extensively lectured on the Machin subject in the U.S., U.K. and Germany and presented seminars at the APS Summer Seminar.

Additional collecting interests: Germany, China and parts of Scandinavia.
