Welcome

President's Message  |  Collectors Club at NOJEX 2013  |  125th Anniversary of Der Berliner Philatelisten-Klub

The Collectors Club is a group of more than 750 people who have come together to further the study of philately, promote the hobby and provide a social, educational, and non-commercial setting for the enthusiastic enjoyment of our common passion.

The Clubhouse

Founded in 1896, the Club counted among its members the leading—even legendary—names in philately. Today's membership is no exception and includes some of the hobby's best-known collectors, exhibitors, and authors. The vast majority of our group, however, are "regular" collectors who have one thing in common—a thirst to share their enjoyment of the hobby and a desire to learn more about collecting among others who take philately seriously.

Our physical "heart" is the Club's landmark five-story brownstone, designed by famed architect Stanford White, located at 35th Street and Madison Avenue in New York City. A $1 million renovation was completed in 2001 to ensure that the Clubhouse will meet our needs now and well into the future. While the majority of our members are from the tri-state area, others come from throughout the US and many foreign countries.

President's Message
March 2013

Ed Grabowski
President

“I was most pleased to join with many members of the Collectors Club for February’s Berlin trip to help celebrate the 125th Anniversary of Der Berliner Philatelisten-Klub. By all accounts this was an outstanding celebration with representations from the Royal Philatelic Society and the Collectors Club participating. President Wolfgang Bauer and his team are to be congratulated for putting together an outstanding meeting—one of the very best philatelic meetings that I have ever attended. I also wish to extend my special congratulations to Bob Odenweller and Kees Adema of the U.S., and Patrick Pearson and Wolfgang Maassen from Europe for being among the latest recipients of the Berlin Klub’s most prestigious Lindenberg Medal for outstanding service to philately. In recognition of the importance of this award, the four new winners, along with President Bauer, are pictured on the cover of this edition of the CCP. Finally, special thanks to Wade Saadi for organizing the U.S. participation in the celebration. Wade’s full report appears elsewhere in this edition. For those interested in getting a bit of the flavor of the celebration, I direct you to the photo essay ( PDF ) on this website.

At the exhibits in Berlin, I was particularly struck by our own Keith Stupell’s non-traditional presentation. In two regular frames he mounted pages with a number of unconnected covers that he thought had some exceptional or exciting aspects. Each page contained regular text and a QR code that the viewer could capture on their smart phone. Thereafter, the viewer could listen to a recording of Keith discussing the particular item(s) in detail. But that was not all. He also brought along a huge all-in-one monitor-computer that ran the new Windows 8 operating system. On it he had placed the data base of his extensive collection of everything and anything to do with Germany. With a minute’s worth of instruction, a visitor could readily access Keith’s data base from the touch screen, locate the sections of Keith’s numerous collections of interest to them and bring up super-sized high resolution images of Keith’s material for viewing or discussion with Keith and guests around the display. Keith clearly captured the imaginations of the eight-to-eighty crowd with this presentation, and I could not help but feel that I was looking at one of the areas of the future of philately.

On the home front, it is my pleasure to welcome Niko Courtelis as the latest member of the Collectors Club Board of Governors. In accord with our by-laws, Niko was elected at the Board’s February meeting to fill a vacancy on the Board, and will run for a full term on the Board at the next annual meeting. He brings an extensive background in graphic design to the Collectors Club (He has even designed some stamps!), and is already working on his first few assignments.

Plans are moving forward for our participation at the NOJEX Show on Memorial Day weekend. As of this writing, there are still some open frames, so there still may be a chance to get your entry in by the time you read this. Further details on the show will appear on this website.

Speaking of the web site, I think we have reached a new milestone in getting the videos of our regular meetings onto the site. Art Groten’s March 20th presentation at the Club was posted to the web site within two days of his presentation. His thoughts on the future of exhibiting are most provoking, and we have included them almost verbatim in the meeting summary that appears in this edition. During the coming year, we plan to use the web site and email to be in regular contact with Club members and specifically to use the web site to provide rapid and current updates on the Club’s activities.

We have selected Arno’s Restaurant in midtown Manhattan as the site for our May 15th Lichtenstein Awards Banquet. Full details on the dinner will be sent by Dr. Mark Banchik to Resident Members shortly. All members and their guests are welcome to attend the dinner. Please contact Executive Secretary Irene Bromberg or me if you would like additional information on the dinner and wish to attend. The highlight of the dinner will be the presentation of the Alfred F. Lichtenstein Medal to Alan Warren.

Collectors Club at NOJEX 2013

We are pleased to announce that we will hold a Collectors Club Multi-frame Exhibition at this year’s NOJEX Stamp Show. NOJEX is the tri-state’s premier annual philatelic event and the area’s only APS World Series of Philately show. It will be held on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26, 2013, at the Clarion Hotel in Secaucus, NJ. With more than two hundred exhibition frames available, this will be an excellent opportunity for Club members to show their diverse collecting interests to a wide audience.

In addition to the regular NOJEX Awards, there will be a special group of Collectors Club Awards that will also be recorded on a new plaque that will be displayed at the Clubhouse. We will also sponsor a Club dinner on Friday evening May 24th, and hold a series of lectures during the course of the show.

A NOJEX prospectus and show information package has been sent to all Club members. Further information on the show is also available at the NOJEX web site (http://www.nojex.org/). Please continue to monitor the Collectors Club website to get information about the latest developments regarding our participation in the show. Members who wish to participate in this exhibition are strongly encouraged to send their applications to NOJEX as soon as possible. We anticipate a strong membership response to this new Club initiative.

The 125th Anniversary of Der Berliner Philatelisten-Klub

Berliner Philatelisten-Klub von 1888 eV.

Members of the Collectors Club and The Royal Philatelic Society of London joined with fellow philatelists in Berlin on the weekend of February 15-17, 2013, to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Der Berliner Philatelisten-Klub. By all accounts it was a superb celebration. We are most pleased to note that Bob Odenweller and Kees Adema were among the awardees for the Berlin Klub’s most prestigious Lindenberg Medal for their outstanding contributions to philately. A full report by Wade Saadi will appear in the next Collectors Club Philatelist. In the interim, members might enjoy looking at the photo essay ( PDF ), which illustrates many of the weekend’s highlights.
